Broken Bow Lake / Max depth

In 1947, construction was begun on the Tenkiller Ferry Dam across the Illinois River. The lake was named after the Tenkillers, a prominent Cherokee family who owned land and operated a ferry service near the site where the dam now stands.

Tenkiller Ferry Lake is a favorite of many swimmers. Most of the gated campgrounds have buoyed swimming areas. There is a swimming beach at Chicken Creek South, near the boat ramp complex, that has lots of parking and grassy areas to picnic while swimming.

Lake Tenkiller, created by damming the Illinois River beginning in 1947 with completion in 1953, has attracted tourists and fishermen to this once sparsely settled area.
